Featured man – Private Charles Brien

Charles Brien originally enlisted as a Special Reservist, but after 4 months of his six months of training, he decided to become a Regular on 30th July 1910. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion in Chatham. He transferred to the 1st Battalion upon their arrival at Chatham in December 1910. He was among the original members of the 1st Battalion to deploy to France in August 1914. He was sent to join the 4th Battalion as a reinforcement in Iraq, but was sent back to the UK a few months later, diagnosed with tuberculosis. He was discharged from the Army on 29 November 1916, and was issued a Silver War Badge. He died on 15 October 1917 in Cardiff. The CWGC commemorates those who died (i) in service or (ii) of causes attributable to service, and as a consequence he has a CWGC headstone at Cathays Cemetery at Cardiff.
