Featured man – Private Frederick Ernest Mayston

Frederick Ernest Mayston was born in Battersea in 1896. He enlisted in August 1912, and gave an alias as a surname, only revealing his true surname in June 1918. His service record’s medical card states ‘Examined [at Rushmoor Camp] for service in Singapore and found fit 24 July 1914’, but events would overtake this exotic posting becoming a reality. He was injured several times, and saw most of the war in France, but was also sent to Gallipoli in 1915. He was medically discharged on 17 January 1919. Whilst in Liverpool with the 3rd Battalion, he got married and spent the rest of his life in Liverpool.
